Spirituality, Potential, and the Bards

What is a bard?

The Webster dictionary defines the bard as an ancient Celtic poet or any poet. 

Throughout history we see the term bard evolving and taking on new cultural nuances and shades.  But the root meaning of the word (despite the passing of ages, and its ancient origin) remains the same – a poet.

 Who is a poet?

 The Webster offers a rather bleak definition:  “One who writes poetry”

 So what is poetry? What is a poem?  “A composition in verse, esp. one characterized by the use of heightened language and rhythm.”

 The Webster’s definition is rather dry and technical.  I feel like this doesn’t tell me much about who a poet is, and what is his or her true purpose.

 If I had to define a poet my expanded definition would be:

A poet is a skilled observer with a longing to see the true essence of things, which he or she then feels obligated to share with others.  Because the truth is simple it is more efficient to convey its essence by using precise, uncomplicated and condensed expressions. The linguistic embellishments a poet uses: the play on words, the rhythm, the rhyme, the metaphors ect., are tools without which a poet would be a prose writer and would require a lot more words to convey ideas. 

 Through my personal songwriting experience I can attest that it takes more words to say the same thing in prose than it does in poetry!

 In short, the word bard  is just an old term for poet.  And a poet is simply a creative and concise storyteller.

 I first became aware of the term bard while growing up in the Soviet Union.  I was about 5 years old.

 Quoting Wikipedia:

 “The term bard came to be used in the Soviet Union in the early 1960s, and continues to be used in Russia today, to refer to singer-songwriters who wrote songs outside the Soviet establishment. Because in bard music songwriters perform their own songs, the genre is also commonly referred to as author song. Bard poetry differs from other poetry mainly in the fact that it is sung with simple guitar accompaniment as opposed to being spoken. Another difference is that this form of poetry focuses less on style and more on meaning. This means that fewer stylistic devices are used, and the poetry is often in the form of a narrative. What separates bard poetry from other songs is the fact that the music is far less important than the lyrics; chord progressions are often very simple and tend to repeat from one bard song to another. A far more obvious difference was the commerce-free nature of the genre; songs were written to be sung and not to be sold.”

 It turns out that the bard movement outlived the Soviet Union, and while the Soviet Union fell apart in 1991 the bards continue to write and perform their songs.

 It is a musical movement that most likely started out of a need for spiritual expression.  The Soviet Union was extremely intolerant towards religion and spirituality of any kind.

 The Soviet bard movement is a real life example confirming that a human being cannot feel fulfilled without spiritual expression.  We long to express our spiritual essence even when such expression is intolerable and even forbidden.  The bard songs were not necessarily openly “spiritual” in their lyrics or outward meaning, but in their very essence they breathed and emitted unparalleled profound spirituality.

 The bard song is a paradox just like an afflicted being.  (On the surface one might appear poor and plain, but from within the soul illuminates and radiates with eternal riches!).  Perhaps the capacity for paradox stems through oppression and centuries of war and instability that much of humanity has endured and continues to endure till this day.  Out of the most wretched times come some of the world’s greatest minds and artistic and cultural masterpieces and milestones.

 This is a living testimony to the immortality of the spirit.  The spirit cannot be crushed by mere external events.  The mind and the soul will always prevail over matter.  As many of us are beginning to live the economical challenges that some predict are ahead – I feel that it is wise to arm ourselves with a strong spirit.  Where there is a will, there is a way.  Where a door is closed there can be opened a window to allow in Light and fresh air (metaphorically speaking) - Enough spiritual sustenance not only to “survive” the challenge, but even to flourish and become greater!  This principal is always true on an individual scale, and as the Russian bards have proven – it can hold true even on a massive national scale!

 Sometimes it takes a lot of readjusting and shifting of values and priorities.  When the Russian spirit was not allowed to express itself the people created a gigantic grass roots movement infiltrating all social levels with “the bard song”. The bard song fueled people to express themselves with an even greater spiritual capacity than if they were permitted spiritual and religious freedom.  The bard song and its quest for a deeper meaning outlived the regimen that attempted to suppress all seeds of spiritual evolution.

 To this day I listen to these imperfect recordings of these most precious and touching songs and my heart skips a beat each time.  The simple chords and lyrics  all combined together with passion and purpose, with longing and need, with heartfelt honesty and sincere expression till this day touch my heart in corners I never knew there were!

 Perhaps it is that when a human being is most longing for air that he or she comprehends all the greatest reasons to live.

 To conclude, this entry was meant to shed light on the Soviet bard movement that continues till this day, and that lives on in the hearts of millions as well as in the new songs that continue the tradition.

 And this entry was also meant to offer hope to those who are perhaps starting to face challenges in their own personal lives.

 In summary actually this blog post is about the “hidden potential” that is within each one of us.

 It is about a certain quality within a human being that makes him or her eternal.  It is the “essence”, the “soul” a “spark of Divine Light” ect… Regardless of the multitude of names “it” goes by, it is the real “us” and in my opinion the purpose of creation and evolution.

 If we search for this “spirituality” we will together transform darkness into Light.  Just like a tiny flame of a candle can light up a large dark space, so even a faintly lit smile can disperse a great quantity of darkness!  It takes a gentle awakening and stirring of our conscious to realize that nothing can really crush our spirit, and that we are capable of far grater feats that most believe.

The site keeps evolving

Ok, don’t laugh…!  My website has changed again!!!  It seems that I change my website’s theme/look quicker than I post new blog entries.  The fact that somewhere deep within me there is a dormant visual artist or painter, doesn’t help the matter.  It seems that every time I am under stress or even the slightest pressure, what do I do?  I change my website! I think this has grown into an unhealthy addiction that I must brake ASAP before I make everyone including myself dizzy.  I must find another outlet to release my stress and leave my poor website alone!!!

But it’s just so calming… although don’t ask me how sitting in front of a monitor going through xhtml/css code is calming, when here in FL the sun is shining and it’s such a lovely day.

I have been under a LOT of stress lately. Interesting developments are swirling in the air.  Things that require intense concentration, and a whole lot of patience.  But that’s definitely no good reason to redesign a site!  Perhaps I should start painting again to calm my nerves. See, music is so sacred to me that unless I am in a perfect mood - I don’t touch it.  It’s not an outlet through which I exhale the pressure and confusion of the day.  Music to me is a stream of contentment, purity and bliss.  A way to communicate something wonderful and powerful beyond words.

But a website… what’s a website?  It’s like a blank canvas with a structure.  I move things around, change colors, change photos… Given the fact that I don’t own a TV getting lost in code can be a good distraction. And since I know my site in and out it almost takes no mental energy to move things around.  Before I used to take the site down and then upload the updated version.  Now I don’t even do that anymore, it’s all done in one go, live!  CRAZY!   Well, anyway,  I think I realize that after changing my website at least the fiftieth time I am better off writing blog entries instead like normal people do.  At least blogging is a communication method and a form of self-expression that most people can relate to.  I bet I just need to get into it, and then I’ll be a compulsive blogger (lol).

A Place to Start by Janine Slayton

As children and teenagers, many of us at one time or another imagine ourselves as famous singers. We dreamed of being the next Diana Ross, Mariah Carey, or even Gwen Stefani. The fantasy of performing on stage in front of thousands of adoring fans, who are there just to hear and see you, is a common one. After all, being a famous singer is glamorous and exciting. It is a very rare few, however, who decide to really pursue that dream of creating their own music to share with the world. It takes someone passionate and determined to make a dream like that become reality. Inga is one of those rare souls who has decided to make that universal fantasy a reality for herself.
Inga was born in Riga, the capital of Latvia. As a young child and teenager, she moved around quite a bit with her family. At the age of seven, she moved to Denmark, where she learned to speak Danish fluently. She also resided in London (where she learned English), New York City, and Canada. In Canada, she attended a French school, and learned to speak French. Following Canada, she returned to Upstate New York for some time before eventually settling down in Florida.

Inga’s love for music began to manifest itself at a very young age, with little Inga putting on concerts for her dolls as she played with them. When she was young, her family owned a piano that they had inherited from her grandparents. She was always attracted to the piano, and eventually taught herself how to play. Although she loved the piano, her frequent moving made it difficult to really pursue the instrument. Years later, as a teenager, she discovered the guitar and fell in love. According to Inga, her introduction to the guitar was “a meeting of fate,” and once it came into her life she never looked back. The guitar inspired her and ignited the fire within her soul to create music.

Everything in life can inspire art. Musicians and other artists are inspired by everything around them: family, friends, other artists, nature, and endless other things. Inga admits that everything around her influences her music, though some things have influenced her art more than others. As an avid reader, much of the Russian and French literature she has read over the years has influenced her art, as well as the works of the great Jane Austen. Enya has been another inspiration for Inga, who admires her for “the way she presents herself as an artist. I am intrigued by the way her music connects without her personality getting in the way.”

Following in Enya’s footsteps, Inga’s goal is to create music that can connect deeply with others, without her own personality becoming infused into the music. The music is more about creating connections with and between other people than it is about promoting Inga herself. When she describes her songwriting process and what spurred her to create music, she refers to it as “a call to duty.” Her songs, she says, write themselves, and she describes her songwriting process as “a prayer in reverse. I’m just receiving it, like I am a conduit.” While the songs come from within her, and from her own experiences, there is also an outer influence that spurs her to write songs. When that inspiration strikes, she says the song just writes itself: “If it’s not written in five minutes, it’s not my song to write.” Inga also compares her songwriting process to giving birth to a child, the song within needing nurturing and love to grow into something that enters the world. Creating music is “not creating something out of nothing. It is given to us, and we put it into place,” she says.

Unlike many musicians today who are looking for fame and money, Inga’s focus is simply on connecting to the world around her, getting closer to nature and the people around her. The decision to share her music came not from within her, but from nature itself, and she says,”Everything depends on nature, and we all depend on each other. It was time to share my music, to give it away because someone else might need it.” She shares her music not for fame or money, or the traditional definition of success that we all adhere to, but because she feels it is her duty to share it.

Every artist has themes that they explore through their art. Many songwriters focus on the idea of love in their music, and as a result there are countless songs floating around in the world that focus on the subject. Inga believes that love songs definitely have their place, because especially during their teenage years, girls are at a stage where they are looking for love, but they don’t necessarily know what love is yet. The majority of musicians writing love songs, however, “create an ideal for love that sets young girls up for failure. I aspire to write love songs that are real and tangible. It is not all about passion. The way I see it, true love grows on the foundation of sincere friendship.” She believes that music needs to have a more positive and realistic message, especially considering the amount of people who turn to music to find ways to cope with the struggles they are facing in their own lives. As a result, she tries to focus on sending positive message through her music and inspiring her listeners, regardless of the topic of the song.

Inga’s musical journey has been very different from most other musicians’. She has paved her way into the musical world entirely on her own. While her friends and family have encouraged her dreams to create and share her music with the world, she has gotten to where she is today through her own determination and perseverance. She taught herself how to play the guitar, nurturing that talent herself over the years. When it came time to learn how to compose and produce her music, again she did what was necessary to teach herself those skills. As she has said, she needed to learn these things out of necessity, but there is also “a power in realizing that you need something and you can work through the process on your own. It’s about not being afraid, getting it wrong a few times and then [eventually] getting it right.” Rather than feeling that taking the time to learn these aspects of music production was a setback, she looks at it in a positive light. The years she spent learning music production and engineering and creating her own website to promote her music allowed her to remain in control of her art, rather than forcing her to become a puppet of the recording industry. It may be a longer, bumpier road, but at the end of it she knows that her music and everything she accomplishes is due to her own hard work and the guidance she receives from within.

Currently, Inga is working on an untitled acoustic album, which, as she says, is “a return to the place where I first started as a songwriter.” This is a departure from her previous releases, Riding the Wind and Invisible Rivers EP, which showcased more of her new age and electronica side. While she says that she still loves the new age and electronica genre, she knows that what she needs now is to explore that more honest and simple realm that the acoustic world opens up. Instead of hiding behind the rich layers of sound that electronica provides, Inga is now ready to bare her soul to the world in her acoustic music.

When Inga began her journey with music many years ago, she envisioned a future for herself with the music she created. The journey has not always taken her where she expected to go, but she says that she has ended up in a place far better than she expected. She believes that through her trust in nature and her faith, she will continue to be guided. If she shares her music without expecting anything in return the universe will provide for her needs. While it is sometimes frightening to bare her soul to the world with her acoustic music, it also helps her to understand and connect with “what is important”. In fact, while she describes sharing her acoustic music as personal as “sharing an intimate diary…full of scribbles, imperfections, and crossed out lines,” at the same time she feels that it is not about herself at all. 

Inga is a truly remarkable young artist, full of love, life, and hope for the future. Listening to her music, one can’t help but feel a sense of peace and hope, which is exactly the feeling she is hoping to evoke. Through her music, she hopes to capture the idea of what she believes life is all about: “Those simple miracles that are easily overlooked, yet reflect the foundation of the universe: a smile of a friend, a spring shower, a harvest of food, a blooming flower…” Inga’s strong spirit and immense love for life can serve as an example for us all. She has proven that with some hard work, determination, and appreciation for the world around us, there is no dream that can not come true, and the reward we get for following our heart’s earnest pursuit can surpass our own expectations!

Among my favorite character traits at the top of the list has always been gratefulness. It is so easy to take for granted the people we love and the things we appreciate.  But I believe that taking the time to be grateful for all that we are blessed with is one of the secrets and keys to true happiness, fulfillment and even personal and professional success!

I never cease to be amazed at the power and contagiousness of gratitude.  A true heartfelt and sincere gratitude doesn’t have to be expressed in words or in actions.  If suffices that it is felt in order to radiate from within us, making the day brighter for everyone around, and even for those who are miles away. 

Yet when we do get the opportunity to express our gratitude verbally, and open a heart full of appreciation and kindness towards another, it is a most marvelous moment that lasts for an eternity!  

Thoughts, words, and acts of kindness keep the world sustained.  Gratitude is kindness with a personal touch.  I think it’s the best gift anyone could ever give or receive.

New Sound, New Site, New Blog!

The past couple of months I have been optimizing and re-organizing my website to ensure that it is as functional, informative, and interactive as possible!

With this new blog it is now easy for me to keep everyone up to date on the latest happenings. In the coming months you can expect to hear new acoustic songs, live recordings, and I’ll also be posting videos!

I have finally begun recording my second album. As the songs are being recorded I will post free downloads!

Return to Acoustic…

The transition to acoustic is a return to a place where I first started as a songwriter. It is a quiet place in my heart where simplicity and honesty are the biggest treasures.

“Unpretentious” would be the best word to describe how I’d like to be perceived as an artist. Somehow this quality resonates so strongly when I pick up the guitar!

Sharing my acoustic music is like sharing an intimate diary. It is an unedited expression and perception of life and love. It is full of scribbles, imperfections, and crossed out lines, and that’s what I love about it!

What I appreciate about the song-writing process is that it is very introspective and at the same time altruistic. I feel like the music is not about myself despite being so open and personal.

It is rather about encompassing the essence of what I have come to perceive as the meaning of life. It is about collecting the riches abounding in simplicity. Those simple miracles that are easily overlooked yet reflect the foundation of the Universe: a smile of a friend, a spring shower, a harvest of food, a falling leaf, a blooming flower… Writing acoustic songs helps me connect to these simple gifts!

Of course I am not walking away from new age and electronic genres. These are amazing universes, with rich palettes of color and layers of texture! I hope to release many more collaboration CDs like Riding the Wind, and will continue to lend my vocals and song-writing to new age composers in the very near future!
